ECOSYSTEMS OF PERU. SESSION N ° 14.

PERUVIAN SEA ECOSYSTEM.

General, Peruvian sea oceanographic reality, characteristics, the current El Niño. El niño Southern oscillation (ENSO).

1. HYDROGRAPHIC AND OCEANOGRAPHIC REAL DEL MAR PERUANO

COLD SEA POWER PERUANA:

Features:

Peru has been blessed by nature with more than 3,000 miles of coastline around one of the richest seas in the world, the same as what has become, apart from certain excesses extractive fishing the fourth country in the world.

With the exception of the 52 rivers that cut across the narrow coastal strip on its way to the Pacific, the coast is in the form of an arid desert plunges into the ocean as wide beaches, sheltered coves, rocks and rough projections formed by the colossal Millennial momentum wind and waves.

It extends from tip Pariñas in Piura (5 degrees south latitude) to central Chile.

Peruvian Humboldt current influences in this sector.

In cold water, its temperature varies between 13 and 14 degrees c. (Winter from May to October) and 15 to 17 degrees c. (In summer, from November to April)

More than 300 species of fish, the anchovy, sardine and mackerel of great economic importance.

This rich fauna underpins other marine species such as sea lions, or sea cat sea otters, dolphins and seabirds.

The rocky shores and offers a host of molluscs and crustaceans.

Some species threatened with extinction: Humboldt penguin, chingungos or sea cat and dolphin.

Phytoplankton produces a large amount of organic matter, which serves as food for the rest of the food web and makes the cold sea is considered one of the richest in the world.

2. FACTORS THAT ENHANCE THE EXISTENCE OF PHYTOPLANKTON ARE:

Temperature:

The Peruvian current moves cold water masses from the Antarctic sea has causing the temperature between the 13th and 14th C in winter (May-October) and 15 to 17oC in summer (November-April). At lower temperature having more oxygen.

Light:

The location of Peru under the equator allows the existence of a large amount of sunlight. It is necessary for the process of photosynthesis.

Salinity:

The salt consists of 21.69% of the sea. This high percentage determines a greater density of water and allows the plankton to remain in the area, serving food to the large number of species that inhabit this area.

3. ECO-REGION OF THE TROPICAL SEA.

Is from 5 ° of latitude south to northern Peru and covers the coast of Piura and Tumbes.

Part of the tropical zone stretching from northern Peru to southern California.

In the sea warm tropical marine waters dominated by the presence of the child's current, temperature to 22 ° C in summer and 19 ° C in winter. This explains a lower concentration of oxygen and therefore lower productivity of the sea.

The warmth and lower salinity of the sea make fewer viscosity.

The ocean influences the climate of the north coast, which is tropical, with little fog, rain and a temperature higher than 25 ° C throughout the year.

The sea adjacent to the coasts of Peru, has unique characteristics that determine the existence of:

o A large biomass of plankton and phytoplankton.

o More than 600 species of fish and a wide variety and abundance of marine mammals, molluscs and crustaceans among the most important genera of marine fauna.

Additionally, in its continental shelf and other submarine areas, Peru has oil and natural gas.

4. MARINE CURRENTS

Surface currents are caused by prevailing winds and the twisting motion of the Earth, which drives the currents circulating in eddies or circles. They move at low speeds, a few km. per hour.

The current depth of over 100 meters below the surface, are driven by differences in water temperature and salinity, which affect the density and movement of deep water.

5. Niño

Sir Gilbert Thomas Walker (June 14, 1868 - November 4, 1958) was a physicist, a climatologist, meteorologist and British statistician. It is best known for his novel description of fluctuations in atmospheric parameters from ground sites, helping to understand El Niño, a major oscillatory phenomenon, which concerns the global climate, and the breakthrough in the study of climate in general.

El Niño is a global climate, erratic cycle (Strahler speaks of cycles between three and eight years), which is a change in movement patterns of ocean currents in the tropics causing therefore a superposition of warm water from the northern hemisphere area immediately north of Ecuador on the very cold water emersion characterizing the Humboldt or Peru; this wreaks havoc worldwide due to heavy rains, affecting mainly to South America, both on the Atlantic coast and in the Pacific.

The name "El Niño" is due to fishermen from the port of Paita in northern Peru that found that the water system or Peruvian Current Humboldt Current, which flows from south to north off the coast of Peru and Chile, heated at the time of the holidays and schools or schools of fish were fleeing to the south due to a warm current from the Gulf of Guayaquil (Ecuador). This phenomenon was given the name El Nino, because of its association with the period of Christmas and the Christ Child.

The scientific name of the phenomenon El Niño-Southern Oscillation (El Niño-Southern Oscillation, ENSO, for its acronym in English). It is a phenomenon explained by the movement of Earth's rotation.

ECOSISTEMAS DEL PERÚ SESIÓN N° 13.

LA CAPA DE OZONO, CONCEPTOS, IMPORTANCIA, DETERIORO Y RECOMENDACIONES PARA EVITAR SU DESTRUCCIÓN.

UV-A

11. REFLEXIÓN FINAL

DEBEMOS ACEPTAR QUE ES NECESARIO CAMBIAR NUESTROS HÁBITOS Y FORMA DE VIVIR CON RESPECTO A NUESTRA EXPOSICIÓN AL SOL PARA ADAPTARNOS A LAS NUEVAS CONDICIONES IMPUESTAS POR ESTE FENÓMENO, DEBEMOS TODOS ESTAR CONSCIENTES DE QUE, DE HOY EN ADELANTE LA RUTINA DE LA VIDA, COMO LA CONOCÍAMOS HASTA AHORA, TERMINÓ.

THE OZONE LAYER, CONCEPT, IMPORTANCE, IMPAIRMENT AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO PREVENT DESTRUCTION.

1. What is ozone and why is it important for life on earth? What is the current state of the ozone layer? What are the consequences of ozone depletion? Effects on human health.

Between 19 and 23 kilometers above the earth´s surface in the stratosphere, a thin coat of gas, the ozone layer surrounding the earth and protects it from harmful sun rays.

This is caused by the effect of sunlight on oxygen and is the only substance in the atmosphere that can absorb the harmful ultraviolet radiation (UV-B) from the sun. This thin coat makes life possible on earth.

Since 1974, scientists have warned about a potential global crisis as a result of the progressive destruction of the ozone layer caused by chemical substances made by man, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

2. What is the current state of the ozone layer?

According to a report of the Programme of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1994, the rate of growth in the production of ozone depleting substances (ODS).

For example, CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), has decreased as a direct result of reductions in global emissions of these substances. The downside is that there is a steady growth of ozone-depleting substances in the stratosphere, from industrial sources.

3. Report on UV Radiation

Background

Has been studying the phenomenon of the weakening of the ozone layer in recent months. The ozone layer protects life on earth from excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun.

It has conducted a field study using technology to determine how much and what type of UV radiation is reaching the surface.

This study was conducted with data from 12 satellites of NASA, ESA, KNMI, the Environment Agency of Canada and the Russian Institute of Meteorology.

Ecuadorian Civilian Space Agency detected a weakening of the density of the ozone layer over the equatorial belt, which places it at the minimum, National Agency reported Andes. 2009.

4. Report on UV radiation.

Key questions, with the density of the ozone layer over the equatorial belt of the planet, how much UV radiation is reaching the surface?

What type of UV radiation is the most is coming to the surface and in which areas have the greatest impact?

5. Ultraviolet radiation.

It is divided into three groups according to their wavelength and the role they play in the photochemical processes and human health:

UV-A

It is the continuation of the visible radiation and is the least energy, however due to its high intensity can cause significant damage to skin. Wavelength is between 400 and 320 nm.

UV- B

Reaching the earth highly attenuated by the ozone layer.

It is also called biological UV varies between 280 and 320 nm and is dangerous to life in general.

In the short term produce erythema (redness and burns).

In the long term can cause wrinkles, melanoma (skin cancer), cataracts and weakened immune system. Represents only 5% of the UV and 0.25% of total solar radiation reaching the earth's surface.

UV-C

It is the most dangerous for humans, but is totally absorbed by oxygen in the atmosphere therefore has no significant impact. This radiation is used in industrial processes, water purification, disinfection, etc.

The nanometer is a unit of length equal to one billionth of a meter (1 nm nm = 10-9 m). Commonly used to measure the wavelength of ultraviolet radiation, infrared radiation and light

Dobson unit (English, du) is a way of expressing this amount of ozone in the atmosphere, specifically in the stratosphere.

Specifically it is a measure of the thickness of the ozone layer.

6. UV Report on why ozone disappears?

Although most of the ozone is produced on the planet's equatorial belt, the gas is redistributed to the poles by the Coriolis effect.

It is natural that there is less ozone density in the equatorial belt, but this density should not be less than 280 Dobson units

The Coriolis effect, among other factors, helps to define the global pattern of winds on the planet. When ozone reaches the South Pole, is destroyed by the chlorine in the PSC and a seasonal south polar hole, so that no ozone is produced sufficient to offset the loss. There is another hole, smaller, over the North Pole.

This atmospheric circulation pattern has been recently checked by a study published in the journal SCIENCE.

The study, by Pauluis (Mathematical Sciences, University of New York), Czaja (Group of Atmospheric Physics, Imperial College London) and Korty (Atmospheric Sciences Texas A & M Texas), details the pattern of redistribution air at the altitude where there ozone layer.

Direct observations of the GOME-2 satellite detail the process of ozone destruction in the South Pole

7. CONCLUSIONS.

• The ozone layer over the equatorial belt of the planet has waned considerably over the past 15 years. This phenomenon seems to result from the destruction of the ozone layer seasonal hole above the South Pole.

• As a result, the UV radiation reaching the earth's surface in this region exceeds the range of WHO and WMO for human tolerance.

• The amount and strength of radiation reaching our region is the highest in the whole planet and represents a clear and present threat to ALL the people of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, the most affected is the Andean region of these countries.

• Due to its position in the world, our region receives much more radiation than the polar region under the seasonal ozone hole, also the weakening of the ozone layer over the equatorial region is permanent, unlike the southern polar hole is seasonal : our problem occurs during ALL YEAR.

• As a result of excessive exposure to radiation and its cumulative nature is statistically safe to say that many suffer from cancer, different types of blindness, and decreased functional immune system.

• Because the potency of mutagenic radiation 340nm frequency is very high, it is likely an increase in cases of congenital disabilities and problems associated with genetic mutations.

8. RECOMMENDATIONS.

• You must protect especially the children because their developing organism is more vulnerable, should be immediate regulations regarding hours of recreation in schools and colleges to protect them.

• Outdoor activities should be taken with extreme care and protection from now on.

• When using sunscreen, they should be a rate not less than SPF 70 on the coast, islands, Amazon and not less than 100 in the mountains, blocking the lower rate, are not useful. Should also be able to block not only UVB but also UVA (mutagenic radiation).

• Foreign tourists visiting our country should be informed of these conditions, so that they can take precautions and keep the prestige of running a responsible tourism.

• All vehicles should use sunscreen to avoid movies occupant exposure to radiation in a place where they can take immediate action to protect themselves.

• The medical community should investigate whether there is a clear statistical correlation between mutagenic huge dose of radiation detected and the apparent increase in cases of Down syndrome and other congenital malformations

• The state must intervene urgently to protect the public from immediate danger, clear and present.

9. Suggestions.

• We need the collaboration of the mass media to keep an information campaign to the public about the risks of radiation, how and when to protect themselves.

• The media (TV, Radio and Internet) should inform the public when the radiation is dangerous.

• Cell phone companies should use this information to alert their customers in real time when the radiation level exceeds tolerable limits.

10. FINAL THOUGHTS.

In this case, timely information when radiation is dangerous, the medium term can mean the difference between a full and healthy life or a personal tragedy and death.

On media and mobile operators SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY lies to get this information to the population that desperately needs.

We made this announcement so bad only because it is necessary: without it, every day, at least one person a day is condemned to suffer terrible diseases and ultimately to die slowly and painfully, because the cumulative nature of damage caused by radiation.

11. FINAL REFLECTION

WE AGREE THAT YOU SHOULD CHANGE OUR WAY OF LIVING HABITS AND WITH RESPECT TO OUR SUN EXPOSURE TO ADAPT TO NEW CONDITIONS IMPOSED BY THIS PHENOMENON, WE SHOULD BE AWARE THAT ALL OF TODAY AND UP THE ROUTINE OF LIFE, as they knew UNTIL NOW ENDED.
